Teacher attitudes as a variable in behavior modification consultation

Abstract

This article considers teacher attitudes as an important variable in implementing a behavior modification program in a public school classroom. Six attitudes which, if held by the teacher, tend to undercut the behavioral consultation endeavor, are discussed. These include: the child needs fixing; it is wrong to express negative feelings; children must not be frustrated; the “should-ought” syndrome; the “he makes me” syndrome; and, children are blameworthy. Suggestions are offered in dealing with the teacher who possesses them.
