Abstract
In the introductory chapter we identified five interrelated themes which run through the experiences of school and individual development portrayed in this book. They are: the relationship between INSET and change and the factors which influence it; the appropriateness of the concepts of training and education to professional development and school improvement; the quest for quality and the debate about effectiveness or efficiency; the development of reflective practitioners and their roles in schools; professional development in the context of lifelong learning
