Organizing the Process of Standardization

Abstract

Abstract This chapter describes how an international standards organization is established and how one can create agreement about standards and legitimacy for the organization and its standards. Standards are sometimes developed by organizations other than those which have standardization as their official purpose. The International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) Technical Committee 176, which is responsible for the ISO 9000 standard, is used as a case study to analyze how international standards organizations develop standards and how problems and ways of solving them are identified and discussed within the organization. The study focuses on the organizational aspects of international standardization work.
