Abstract
Although dry eye seems to be a common symptom in eye care practice, very little is known of its true prevalence in a large population. One reason for this lack of knowledge is that until the recent industry-sponsored dry eye meeting at the National Eye Institute, there was no standard definition for dry eye and the diagnostic criteria varied from study to study.

A requirement for reliable clinical diagnostic tests to offset practitioner reliance on symptomatology and the need for Australian practitioners to consider temporary punctal occlusion for dry eye therapy are implicit in the survey results.
