Abstract
A definition for sustainable tourism is sought. Next, a discussion is presented of how tourism and the environment may develop in Europe, how tourist organizations should react, and the benefits that may from tourism ecolabels are described. The following issues are addressed: tourism within the framework of sustainable development; the different ecolabels employed by accommodation services throughout Europe (Austria, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Luxembourg, UK, France, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and others); the success of the ecolabels; and the impact of ecolabels on the creation of a common tourism market discussed.
