Abstract

1 Note to the compleat scholar: In an article such as this it is scarcely possible to prove or completely substantiate every point. As much as possible I want to avoid ordeal by footnote,' thus, I will not go into detail on every assertion made. But in those instances where I feel that a lengthy discourse would have been called for to establish my assertion, I will indicate this by a ' * at the end of the sentence; I am prepared in these cases to back up my claims at length.
