Stroke patients who appear to have successfully completed a program of rehabilitation may fail to adapt to home and work environments because of one or more psychosocial factors that have not been addressed during rehabilitation. The two most important factors are depression and care-giver and family adjustment. Rehabilitation medicine needs to focus on patient and family adjustment rather than solely on physical outcome.
