TL;DR

The objective of this study was to ascertain whether the relationship of oxygen cost to mechanical respiratory work is the same for hyperventilation as for resistance breathing in normal subjects and to test whether the same relationships hold in the presence of diseases which alter the mechanical properties of the lung.
