Abstract

Birthdate and mortality status were ascertained by means of a mail questionnaire for 584 siblings and 246 offspring of index cases with systemic lupus erythematosus. Life table methods were used to evaluate family members' mortality experience. Mortality risk was found to be not less than that of the comparable U.S. population, matched by sex, age, race, and calendar time. These results do not support the concept that rheumatic diseases characterized by an increase in mortality risk aggregate in family members of patients with systemic lupus. Moreover, the present findings do not support the hypothesis that the clinical sex ratio in systemic lupus reflects an excess mortality risk early in life among potentially susceptible males.
