Abstract
Results of a case-control study on height, weight, Quetelet index, and age at menarche are presented. They are based on interviews of 900 breast cancer patients and 581 controls, aged 25–69 years, inhabitants of the Katowice and Opole districts. Breast cancer risk was found to increase with increasing height, weight, and Quetelet index. It was also elevated in females reporting menarche at ages < 16. It seems that the effect of each of the three characteristics is at least partly independent of the other two, even if nutrition appears to be the common factor. A possible relation between geographic variation in breast cancer occurrence and in body height and weight patterns is observed.
