Striving toward inclusive research practices: the evolution of the participant‐as‐transcriptionist method1

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness and to educate researchers about possibilities for inclusive research practices that address concerns faced by researchers with disabilities. In this paper, the authors document their experiences as they attempted to work as an inclusive research team involving one researcher who is hard of hearing and two researchers who are not hard of hearing. Using the participant‐as‐transcriptionist research project as an example, the authors illustrate how their interactions and learning experiences worked toward inclusion within the research team. Suggestions are provided for other researchers who are committed to building an inclusive research community.
