Abstract

Despite the fact that fewer than one in six women who have a breast biopsy turn out to have a malignancy, and despite some improvements in diagnostic screening, the death rate from breast cancer has remained high and relatively stable for the past 30 years. Obviously, something other than statistics is involved in any woman's hesitation in seeking treatment. These authors concisely summarize the current management of this disease and suggest that the approach to the patient be personal, straightforward, and yet “compatible with the patient's ability to face reality”.
