Abstract
This article is the outcome of a trans-national study of the relative preparedness of the industry in a number of EC and other European states. The findings are presented in the context of the development of the Single Market and particularly its effects on the cross-border mobility, people, goods and capital, and the restructuring of the industry. It looks at such areas as markets, organizational change, product and service development, legal implications, human resource management, social issues and training and education. It concludes by arguing that the industry in some countries has not sufficiently grasped the seriousness of the challenge that is presented to it by its declining share of global tourism receipts.
