Abstract
The interpretation of the terms environment and sustainability is discussed, emphasizing the links between natural resources and people and highlighting the benefits and disadvantages of the very broad definitions now in use. Successive paradigms for appraising and managing the environment are reviewed as a background to defining three dimensions of the management of sustainable development: natural resources systems, institutional development and appropriate management skills. Each of these dimensions is expanded in turn by analysing their principal components. Key areas for development within each are suggested.
