The rise and fall of an aristocratic tourist culture

Abstract

The character of winter society in Nice during the period of 1763–1936 is traced in cultural developmental terms. This society, which originally was comprised of a small homogeneous group of (mostly) sick upper class Englishmen, gradually evolved to a large international group of wealthy (mostly) healthy winter visitors. The character of this later society appears to have conformed to Cohen's model for expatriate communities in which various groups of foreign nationals band together into an international group of expatriates linked with upper status residents. The evolutionary trend from the simple to the complex is seen to be the result of (mostly outside) entrepreneurial acativity directed at an expanding market. A continuation of such activity appears to have led to the mass tourism in present-day Nice. On suit l'évolution de caractére de la societé hivernale à Nice pendant la période 1763 – 1936, en faisant tout particulièrement attention au développement culturel. Cette société, qui à l'origine consistait d'un petit groupe homogéne d'Anglais aristocratiques et (pour la plupart) malades, est devenue peu à peu un grand groupe cosmopolite de visiteurs riches et (pour la plupart) en bonne santé. Le caractère de cette derniére société paraît être un exemple du modèle de Cohen pour les communautés expatriées dans lesquelles divers groupes de ressortissants étrangers forment un seul groupe international d'expatriés qui a des liens avec des nationaux prestigieux. La tendance évolutive du simple au complexe se révèle comme le résultat de l'activité que les entrepreneurs (surtout de l'extérieur) ont dirigée envers un marché croissant. La continuation de cette activité paraît avoir mené au tourisme de masse qui existe à présent dans la région niçoise.
