Changing Women, Changing Therapy

Abstract

Women's roles have changed as the traditional family has taken on modern form, but the continued emphasis on binary gender differences has obscured gender inequality. Using a post-modern lens I examine the way domination and subordination are maintained in gender relations. I suggest that the therapy room is a mirrored room that reflects back the prevailing ideology brought by the therapist and family. Discourses concerning inequality and the material conditions of women's lives remain outside the room. Therapy can be oppressive, not because of what it includes but because of what it excludes.
