The demographic challenge : a study of four large Indian states

Abstract

This work is a product of a UNFPA-sponsored seminar held April 7-8 1989 on population and development issues in four of Indias largest states Bihar Madhya Pradesh Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. focus of this book...is on conditions prevailing in these four states including the determinants of the failure or success of population programmes on the one hand and societal constraints on the other in order to identify priority areas for policy and action as [well as] the relevance of these findings in the national context....The seven chapters of this book whose authors represent multiple disciplines deal with the fertility trends in these states the demand for children and the position of women in their socio-cultural contexts demand creation strategies and their success in this region the family welfare programme and its limitations and finally a look at some success stories from the non-governmental and organized sectors. The main findings of each chapter and emerging policy and programme implications for hastening the pace of demographic change in these states are encapsulated in an overview. (EXCERPT)
