Abstract
This chapter presents three topics in ill-posed problems. The first topic concerns the imposition of specified types of discontinuities on otherwise smooth two and three dimensional solutions of ill-posed problems. The work has application to the recovery of the three-dimensional atmospheric temperature distribution from satellite-observed radiances. A closely related reference is Svensson. The method proposed in the chapter for imposing specified discontinuities on the solution given discrete, noisy values on functionals of the solution can be expected to have application to a number of problems in the atmospheric and geological sciences. The second topic concerns the Richardson/Landweber/Fridman/Picard/ Cimino iterative methods for iterative solutions of large linear systems. The third topic concerns the parameter estimation problem for PDEs with particular application to the reservoir modelling problem.
