Abstract
In recent years, social scientists have been increasingly engaged in disciplinary introspection in an attempt to comprehend the nature of their enterprise. One dimension of this activity has been to relate the evolution of one's discipline to historical contexts, such as the economic, military, or social characteristics which have influenced a discipline over the course of time. For example, in psychology, Buss (1975) has reviewed "the emerging field of the sociology of psychological knowledge," and more recently (Buss, 1980), he has brought together a number of authors concerned with similar ideological and historical analyses (e.g., Danziger, 1980).
