The number of neurons in the normal rat hypoglossal nucleus was calculated and compared with the neuronal number in this nucleus 120 days after a single or a double hypoglossal nerve lesion. The single lesion consisted of a crush or a transection. The double lesion experiments were initiated by a crush or a transection followed by a transection at various intervals after the initial lesion. The results showed no significant nerve cell loss in the single lesion experiments. However, both types of double lesion experiments resulted in a significant nerve cell loss.
