Abstract
AIDS has become the fourth leading cause of death among United States women aged 25–44 [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1993]. Through June 1993, the CDC had received reports of 36,690 AIDS cases among United States adult and adolescent women. Although most AIDS cases in women have been reported among those who inject drugs, in 1992, for the first time, diagnosed cases attributed to heterosexual contact exceeded those attributed to injection-drug use. Annual reported AIDS cases among adult and adolescent women in the United States increased 9% between 1991 and 1992; among men, the increase during the same time period was 2.5%.
