Abstract

The very idea of abstract problem solving seems to be related to Western European schooling (Cole & Scribner, 1974) . While this may be true , it does beg a very important point. The Western European schooling situation, with its emphasis on abstract problem solving, may indeed be a cultural phenomenon . However, it is an important, useful phenomenon.
