Abstract
HM Customs and Excise has been an award-winning government department in relation to equal opportunities. In 1992 the department was voted 'Public Sector Employer of the Year' by the Working Mothers Association (WMA) in a competition which had attracted a record number of entries that year. The competition was supported by the Opportunity 2000 initiative which the department had been quick to sign up to in 1991, being among the first organisations to do so.
