Abstract

The adjustment problems of the cancer patient have been discussed in the medical and psychological literature for many years. Attempts have been made to document and verify the diverse opinions and perspectives that have been proposed to explain the coping process of patients with a life-threatening illness like cancer [1–4]. The intention of this chapter is not to offer a comprehensive summary of the available literature nor provide a research-generated description of the adjustment process. This chapter intends to provide a clinical perspective of some of the problems and issues that the author believes are important for primary caregivers who work with cancer patients to consider. This chapter will address these issues as they apply to the seriously ill cancer patient who requires frequent and repeated hospitalizations for treatment and care.
