Abstract
A complex array of goals guides inquiry. The product of inquiry – which we may call research – can be used for a diverse range of purposes. Different methods of inquiry, guided by different goals, produce different products, which serve different needs. A hammer is a very efficient tool that, when handled skillfully, produces remarkable results. However, it is a very poor tool – even an inappropriate choice – if the task is removing a countersunk screw. Therefore, the conduct of inquiry requires recognizing the most appropriate tool for the job the researcher seeks to accomplish.
