Tourism and AIDS in Thailand

A case study of Thailand, an important sex- tourism destination, in the wake of an AIDS scare is considered, and some general conclusions regarding the interface of tourism and AIDS are proposed.

Abstract

The sudden appearance and worldwide dissemination of AIDS raises complex and as yet unexplored problems for the tourist industry. These are considered in a case study of Thailand, an important sex- tourism destination. The dilemma facing the authorities of protecting tourism by downplaying the threat of AIDS vs. protecting public health by acknowledging it, is examined. The changes in policies toward AIDS, and in the public attitudes to foreigners and tourists, in the wake of an AIDS scare, are traced. Problems of protection of the sex-workers, both female and male, from infection are discussed. Changes in national tourism policies are indicated, and some general conclusions regarding the interface of tourism and AIDS are proposed. Le tourisme et le SIDA en Thaïlande. L'apparition soudaine et la propogation mondiale du SIDA soulèvent des problémes pour l'industrie touristique qui sont complexes et jusqu' à présent inexplorés. On examine ces problémes dans une étude en Thaïlande, qui est une destination importante pour le tourisme sexuel. On discute le dilemme auquel il faut faire face: protéger le tourisme en minimisant la menace du SIDA, ou protéger la santé publique en la reconnaisant. On suit la trace des changements de la politique au sujet du SIDA et des attitudes du public envers les étrangers et les touristes dans le sillage de l'alarme du SIDA. On discute les problèmes de la protection contre la contagion pour les travaileurs sexuels, hommes et femmes. On signale des changements dans la politique nationale du tourisme et on propose quelques conclusions générales au sujet de la connexion entre le tourisme et le SIDA.
