Abstract

SUMMARY This survey explored our final-year students' perceptions of the teaching roles of house officers and other teachers during their clinical postings. The results suggest that they perceive that: (l) they contribute to house officers' continued learning, but house officers do not contribute significantly to their learning; (2) students would not want definite teaching roles as house officers; (3) house officers contributed most to the teaching of students in paediatrics postings and least in surgery postings; (4) in addition, students attribute the source of their knowledge to their own initiative (48.26%), consultant (24.55%), senior residents (23.67%) and house officers (3.5%). These findings are compared with some other published reports and the possible implications and approach for intervention are discussed.
