Abstract
In June 1995, the Committee for the Advancement of University Teaching (CAUT) commissioned Roy Ballantyne and myself to undertake a research project that would promote academic reflection and discourse on the quality of teaching in Australian universities. Our brief arose from concerns held by some members of CAUT that too much emphasis was being placed on technology-based teaching to the exclusion of the wide range of other effective methods in use in Australian universities. Although there were several ways in which we could have pursued the objectives of the brief, CAUT accepted our proposal that we develop a collection of stories about academics’ teaching. The resulting volume by Ballantyne, Bain & Packer (1997) entitled Reflecting on university teaching: Academics’ stories, is the source of the material for this paper.
