Abstract Results in the psychology of reasoning appear to show that people make many errors when confronted with tasks having superficially obvious logical solutions. The task most often used to illustrate this point in both the philosophical and the psychological literature is Wason’s (1966, 1968) selection task. In the selection task an experimenter presents participants with four cards, each with a number on one side and a letter on the other, and a rule of the form ifpthenq, e.g. ifthereisavowelon oneside (p), thenthereisanevennumberontheotherside (q).
