Abstract
Previous studies suggest that high status protects the individual from sanction when he deviates. An experiment is reported which confirms this expectation when deviation is limited in the degree to which it interferes with the attainment of the group goal. As interference rises to the point where the group cannot achieve its goal, however, the high status deviant becomes the target of puniskment more severe than that received by a deviant of intermediate status. This 'status-liability effect is discussed in terms of the removal of status protections, disappointed expectancies, and the effort to secure distributive justice.
