Abstract

Using a case study approach, this article analyzes the connection between a company's business policy and its employee relations strategies and practices at workplace level. It shows how management, in what was one of the fastest growing hotels in Australia, devised advanced human resource policies that proved impossible to implement as the company subsequently fought (unsuccessfully) for survival against the effects of a protracted deterioration in the product market.
