Abstract

A characteristic of scientific method and scientific thinking is the “dissection” of a general phenomenon into its component parts and mechanisms. For example, almost everyone knows that carbohydrates are ultimately metabolized by the human body into carbon dioxide and water. In the science of biochemistry, however, the pathway between input and output is dissected into many intermediate steps, which include the Krebs cycle, a variety of enzyme systems, and numerous intermediate chemical substances.
