Abstract

EXCERPT

Clinical education in nursing is coming under increasing scrutiny, and I think it’s about time. In fall 2004, apparently concerned about innovations to address the nursing shortage that might reduce the quantity and quality of clinical education, the American Organization of Nurse Executives passed a position paper on prelicensure clinical instruction. Similarly, in August 2005, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing adopted its position paper on clinical instruction in prelicensure nursing programs. Both organizations support innovation and research, but are clear that nursing education programs must include clinical experiences with actual patients, supervised by qualified faculty who provide feedback and facilitate reflection.
