Abstract

A conceptual framework for modelling and simulation is proposed. It is based upon a hierarchy of system level descriptions in which higher level descriptions are inferred from lower level ones with the help of a priori assumptions. Two common modes of knowledge acquisition, the “discovery” and the “postulational” approaches are analyzed within the proposed framework.
