Abstract
The pattern of critical illness affecting Indigenous Australians in Western Australia was different from that affecting non-Indigenous patients. The crude hospital mortality was high, but similar to that of non-Indigenous Australians after adjusting for severity of illness and chronic health status.

Critical Care MedicineAPACHE II
13,694 Citations1985William A. Knaus, Elizabeth A. Draper +2 more
The form and validation results of APACHE II, a severity of disease classification system that uses a point score based upon initial values of 12 routine physiologic measurements, age, and previous health status, are presented.
Critical Care MedicineAPACHE II-A Severity of Disease Classification System
13,396 Citations1986William A. Knaus, Elizabeth A. Draper +2 more
The form and validation results of APACHE II, a severity of disease classification system, are presented, showing an increasing score was closely correlated with the subsequent risk of hospital death for 5815 intensive care admissions from 13 hospitals.
The Journal of Infectious DiseasesThe Epidemiology of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in Alaska, 1986-1990 Ethnic Differences and Opportunities for Prevention
232 Citations1994Michael Davidson, Alan J. Parkinson +4 more
The 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine, which contains > 94% of serotypes identified in Alaska Native toddlers and adults, should be used more widely.
Communicable Diseases IntelligenceVaccine Preventable Diseases and Vaccination Coverage in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, Australia, 2011–2015
183 Citations2019Sally J. Ioannides, Frank Beard +11 more
There have been recent increases in IPD, which appear related to low vaccination coverage and highlight the need for improved coverage in this high-risk target group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
BMJABC of intensive care: Outcome data and scoring systems
153 Citations1999K. Gunning, Kathy Rowan
Scoring systems have been developed in response to an increasing emphasis on the evaluation and monitoring of health services to enable comparative audit and evaluative research of intensive care.
Critical CareA comparison of admission and worst 24-hour Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores in predicting hospital mortality: a retrospective cohort study
116 Citations2005Kwok M. Ho, Geoffrey Dobb +4 more
The admission APACHE II model represents a potential alternative model to the worst 24-hour APAChe II model in critically ill nontrauma patients and maintains the overall discrimination ability of the traditional APAC HE II model.
Critical Care MedicineAdverse effect on a referral intensive care unitʼs performance of accepting patients transferred from another intensive care unit*
106 Citations2005Alain Combes, Charles‐Édouard Luyt +3 more
Admission source remains a strong and independent predictor of ICU death, despite adjustment for case mix and disease severity at ICU admission.
Kidney InternationalBurden of end-stage renal disease among indigenous peoples in Australia and New Zealand
93 Citations2003Stephen P. McDonald, Graeme R. Russ
Overall mortality outcomes are poorer for indigenous patients overall, and for each RRT modality, and reflect a broader health profile marked by high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease.
INVASIVE PNEUMOCOCCAL DISEASE IN AUSTRALIA
93 Citations2007Vicki Krause, David Coleman +10 more
Enhanced surveillance for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) was carried out in all Australian states and territories in 2005 with comparative data available since 2001 and the overall rate of IPD in Indigenous Australians was 8.6 times the rate in non-Indigenous Australians.

Critical Care MedicineTiming of intensive care unit admission in relation to ICU outcome
77 Citations1990John Rapoport, DANIEL TERES +2 more
Assessment of the relationship between admission time (from hospital admission to ICU admission) and mortality predicted by the Mortality Prediction Model, actual mortality, and resource use found predicted mortality was higher than actual mortality for patients admitted to the ICU early and was lower thanactual mortality for later ICU admissions.
Kidney InternationalReduction in natural death and renal failure from a systematic screening and treatment program in an Australian Aboriginal community
73 Citations2003Wendy E. Hoy, Zhiqiang Wang +2 more
Survival benefit in the treatment group was observed at all levels of overt albuminuria, in non-diabetics and diabetics, in normotensive as well as hypertensive people, and in people who had been taking angiotensin converting enzyme-inhibitors in the pre-program era, aswell as those who had not.
Critical Care ClinicsErrors and Bias in Using Predictive Scoring Systems
72 Citations1994Jay Cowen, Mark A. Kelley
This work has shown that scoring systems used to predict clinical outcomes for critically ill patients have been refined in the past decade, yet even the most recently developed systems contain flaws that limit their application.
