A glance at a newspaper or at any large city quickly reveals society's priorities: billions of dollars are spent on highways, yet almost nothing on playgrounds; over 50% of mothers in the United States work, but competent day care is expensive and difficult to find. The affluent white, male automobile driver remains the focus of most design, planning, and research (Zimring, Carpman, & Michelson, 1987).
