Secular variation in handedness over ninety years

Left-handed writers of high socio-economic status born in Australia or New Zealand were found to increase from about 2 to 13% over the period 1880–1969, and it is suggested that differential perinatal death may operate together with cultural relaxation in promoting an increasing proportion of sinistrals with time.

Abstract

Left-handed writers of high socio-economic status born in Australia or New Zealand were found to increase from about 2 to 13% over the period 1880–1969. The change was well represented by a symmetrical sigmoid curve which allowed the upper asymptote to be evaluated as 13.63 ± 0.16%. The observed secular variation differed in shape and began earlier than in the United States perhaps because of differences in social status between the samples. It is suggested that differential perinatal death may operate together with cultural relaxation in promoting an increasing proportion of sinistrals with time. On a trouvé une augmentation d'environ 2 à 13 sur la période 1880–1969, du pourcentage de personnes écrivant de la main gauche, de niveau socio-économique élevé, nés en Australie ou en Nouvelle Zélande. Cette modification est bien représentée par une courbe sigmoide symétrique permettant d'évaluer l'asymptote supérieur à 13, 63 ± 0, 16%. La variation observée diffère dans sa forme et a commencée plus tôt qu'aux Etats Unis, peut être en raison des différences de conditions sociales entre les deux exemples. On suggère que la mortalité péri-natale peut intervenir aussi bien que les conditions culturelles pour augmenter avec le temps la proportion des gauchers.
