The process of in-therapy consultation used in symbolic-experiential psychotherapy when an impasse has developed is described and the rationale is discussed and interactional patterns delineated.

Abstract

Consultation has been an important means for providing additional resources for mental health. Family consultation has been guided by the conceptual framework of the systems theory. The process of consultation, however, means different things to different people so that the range of activities in an actual consultation can vary dramatically. This paper describes the process of in-therapy consultation used in symbolic-experiential psychotherapy when an impasse has developed. The rationale is discussed and interactional patterns delineated.
