Organized improvisation: 20 years of organizing

Abstract

This essay uses twenty years of research into organizing as a way both of viewing current research efforts and of laying a foundation for future efforts. Since organizing can be conceived as a continuous flow of movement that people try to coordinate with a continuous flow of input, jazz is used as a metaphor for understanding organizing. Variations on themes and improvisation become key perspectives with which to understand how people communicate and, thereby, organize.
