Abstract
The Soviet work on the dimensions of personality known as ‘Strength of the Nervous System’ and ‘Equilibrium in Dynamism’ is compared with the Western work on introversion-extraversion, in the light of the suggestions that have been made that each of these three dimensions is related to level of arousal. Two particular hypotheses are discussed in relation to existing data: (1) that introversion-extraversion is identical to strength of the nervous system; (2) that introversion-extraversion is identical to equilibrium in dynamism. Some general theoretical implications of these two hypotheses are considered.
