Abstract
Abstract When using measurement models with multiple indicators, researchers need to decide about the epistemic relationship between the latent variable and its indicators. In this article, we describe the nature, the estimation, the characteristics, and the validity assessment of formative measurement models.

Journal of Consumer ResearchA Critical Review of Construct Indicators and Measurement Model Misspecification in Marketing and Consumer Research
5,613 Citations2003Cheryl Burke Jarvis, Scott MacKenzie +1 more
A set of conceptual criteria is developed that can be used to determine whether a construct should be modeled as having formative or reflective indicators, and an estimate of the extent of measurement model misspecification in the field is estimated.

A discussion of key differences and rationale that researchers can use to support their use of PLS is provided, followed by two examples from the discipline of Information Systems.

Psychological BulletinThe use of causal indicators in covariance structure models: Some practical issues.
793 Citations1993Robert C. MacCallum, Michael W. Browne
Remedies are described so as to allow for the evaluation of models that contain causal indicators, which are not latent variables but composite variables, and have no indicators in the conventional sense.
Journal of Modelling in ManagementThe error term in formative measurement models: interpretation and modeling implications
342 Citations2006Adamantios Diamantopoulos
It is demonstrated that, unlike in reflective measurement, the error term in formative models is not measurement error but rather a disturbance representing non‐modeled causes and it is shown that, under certain circumstances, the inclusion of an error term is not necessary/appropriate.
