Abstract
An improved 'plug & play' interferometric system for quantum key distribution is presented. Self-alignment and compensation of birefringence remain, while limitations due to reflections are overcome. Original electronics implementing the BB84 protocol makes adjustment simple. Key creation with 0.1 photon per pulse at a rate of 325 Hz with a 2.9% QBER, corresponding to a net rate of 210 Hz, over a 23 km installed cable was realised.

An apparatus and protocol designed to implement quantum key distribution is described, by which two users exchange a random quantum transmission, consisting of very faint flashes of polarized light, which remains secure against an adversary with unlimited computing power.

Low error rates were obtained for the quantum transmissions, and error-free secret keys were distilled from the raw data by use of secure error-correction and privacy-amplification protocols.

This work investigates the performance of separate absorption multiplication InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes as single-photon detectors for 1.3- and 1.55-mum wavelengths and compares them with a germanium avalanche photodiode, which shows a lower dark-count rate.

A formal mathematical model for analyzing the error-correction phase of the quantum cryptographic protocol based on specific assumption about the length of blocks is developed and a simple analytical bound is derived which can server as an estimate for the cot of performing the errors.
