Abstract

Hospital emergency services handle largely routine walk-in cases, the numbers of which are increasing rapidly. A classification of cases into self referrals, professional referrals, and contract cases is used to characterize the emergency department clientele in central urban public hospitals, voluntary teaching hospitals, proprietary hospitals without resident staffs, and to suggest the direction of future utilization.
