Abstract

This paper is about how leaders translate values into action and enduring organisational values. It examines how we have come to think about the values of business leaders and success, what leadership theories do and don't say about values, and what "having a value" means. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the values of founders and leaders intersect, in the case study of P. Roy Vagelos, the CEO of Merck & Company who decided to give away the drug that cured river blindness.
