Extracurricular activities and the adjustment of Asian international students: A study of Japanese students

Abstract

The association between the engagement of Japanese students in extracurricular activities and the students' adjustment to American campus life was examined. The participants were 84 Japanese students studying in a 10-month program in the United States. The study found that engagement in extracurricular activities was positively related to students' general life satisfaction, benefits drawn from academics and extracurricular activities, and levels of academic involvement. Implications for program development for Asian international students are discussed.
