Abstract

In this paper the development by Beechams Ltd. of its penicillins is described. After briefly outlining the historical development of this group's move into the ethical pharmaceutical field as part of a diversification policy the bases of the decision to pursue a particular research line is examined. The technological problems are exposed in some detail in relation to other work in this area of pharmaceuticals and in respect of the potential market. Finally the author relates the sucess of this product inovation to the size of the R & D investment and goes on to develop certain conclusions about the organsation, management and funding of pharmaceutical research.
