Abstract
Robert Stanley Weinberg is a leader among a new breed of marketing men, holding possibly the highest corporate post of any management scientist in marketing today. The story of how he arrived at his position of leadership in the marketing community is almost as remarkable as the contributions he and other management scientists have made to the field. At an early age, Bob Weinberg was already interested in both business and mathematics. In school he became fascinated with numbers, and while in high school he was a member of an All City Mathematics Team. When Bob Weinberg started college, no programs were offered for budding management scientists. Operations research was in its infancy and much of it was classified. Therefore, Weinberg decided to study physics and mathematics. In 1948, a summer incident turned Weinberg's career in an entirely new direction. While working at a resort he acquired a box of old economics books which interested him. His required introduction to economics in college had bored him, but these books left him enthralled. His remaining summer months were spent reading every book on economics he could find, and before returning to I Robert Stanley Weinberg college, Bob Weinberg decided that economics, rather than physics, was the area in which he wanted to apply mathematics. Robert Weinberg was trained as an economist. He graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Science in economics and from Columbia University with a Master of Science. He studied with several leading economists including Fabricant, Bachman, and Gainsbrugh at NYU, and Stigler, Burns, Dean, Mills, and Wald at Columbia.
