586 The Reading Teacher Vol. 48, No. 7 April 1995 We have operated a successful family literacy program in Chicago's Latino neighborhoods for five years. Our program has provided services to more than 300 families. In our program, parents, mothers primarily, have learned to speak and read English, and to take active involvement in their children's school learning.
