Abstract
Rhythmicity is a ubiquitous biological phenomenon. Like homeostasis, it is one of the basic manifestations of living systems (Aschoff and Wever, 1962b). Within the broad spectrum of biological rhythms, circadian rhythmicity, for several reasons, assumes a special position. Its periodicity is quite unusual in that it corresponds to an external rhythmicity, and thus it seems to possess both internal and external components. Knowledge of the basic properties of the circadian system is of special interest for practical and theoretical reasons.
