Abstract

From a theoretical as well as a practical point of view it is important to increase our understanding of recurrent processes in organizations One such process is innovation which I shall take to mean the implementation of a new idea, whether a product of invention or discovery. The relationship between the rate of innovation and the rate of growth is so widely assumed to be positive that a prodigious amount of effort is expended yearly by government, industry, and universities for the production of new ideas. In fact, the research and development laboratory is an organizational embodiment of the commitment to innovation.
